Queens Park Rangers vs Leeds United predictions

This season’s Championship promotion race has been one of the most thrilling in recent memory and there are bound to be more twists and turns to come.

Leeds United were made to wait last weekend. Their fixture only took place on Monday night, when a topsy-turvy encounter against Middlesbrough ended with a 4-3 scoreline in their favour.

Leicester City proceeded to thrash Southampton 5-0 the following day, which means Leeds are four points adrift of the Foxes. One more win for Enzo Maresca’s men will get them over the line.

It therefore looks like a straight battle between Leeds and Ipswich Town for second spot. The former hold an advantage on points as things stand, having amassed 90 to Ipswich’s 89. Leeds also have an edge on goal difference.

However, Ipswich have three games left to play and Leeds only have two. The Whites will feel they need to win both of their remaining matches to stand a chance of automatic promotion back to the Premier League.

The bookmakers have Leeds down as narrow favourites for a top-two finish, but Ipswich’s fate is in their own hands. Nine points from nine would make the Tractor Boys uncatchable and consign Leeds to the play-offs.

The stakes could not be higher. The play-offs offer a second chance to whichever side misses out on automatic promotion, but the psychological blow of falling short will be tough to overcome.

A victory over Queens Park Rangers would boost Leeds’ chances and pile the pressure on Ipswich, who face a tricky test at Hull City on Saturday evening.

Not that Leeds’ trip to Loftus Road will be easy. QPR have something to play for too: a win on Friday would secure their Championship status for another year. This match has implications at both ends of the table.

QPR vs Leeds United betting tips

Both QPR and Leeds United have something to play for as we approach the end of the Championship season.

Leeds to win - 8/13 (Betfred)

If Queens Park Rangers avoid relegation to League One, they will have Marti Cifuentes to thank.

When he replaced Gareth Ainsworth on October 30, QPR were second-bottom of the Championship. If the season had begun upon his appointment, they would be 10th right now.

Four points above the dreaded dotted line, QPR would still be well positioned to stay up even if they were to lose to both Leeds on Friday and Coventry City on the final weekend.

Avoiding defeat in this one will be tough. Consistency has eluded Leeds (and the other promotion candidates) in recent weeks, but the victory over Middlesbrough will have done them the world of good.

Like most teams, the Whites are stronger at home than away, yet they have still emerged triumphant from half of their 22 games at opposition grounds this season.

More specifically, six of their last eight away matches against teams outside the top eight have ended in victory. Daniel Farke’s side can get the job done under the floodlights in west London.

Over 2.5 goals - 4/5 (Betfred)

Leeds have the best defensive record in the Championship. They have conceded a league-low 37 goals and kept a league-high 19 clean sheets. Based on expected goals, no one has given up fewer chances than Farke’s side.

Nevertheless, we fancy the chances of Queens Park Rangers finding the back of the net on Friday. If they are to do that while ultimately being defeated by Leeds, there will have to be more than 2.5 goals in this game.

In 12 encounters at Loftus Road since the turn of the year, QPR have scored in 10 of them. Visitors to this corner of the capital do not often register a clean sheet.

Leeds, for their part, have conceded in five of their last six games, including three in that defeat of Middlesbrough last time out.

Back over 2.5 goals at 4/5 with Betfred

Crysencio Summerville to score any time - 15/8 (Betfred)

Crysencio Summerville only started 12 games in the Premier League last term. He completed the full 90 minutes on just eight occasions.

Summerville has been much more integral this time around. He needs just one more strike to reach 20 for the Championship campaign. Summerville is Leeds’ leading goal-getter and Queens Park Rangers will struggle to keep him quiet in this one.

As well as being a threat from open play, the Dutchman (he remains uncapped ahead of Euro 2024) is Leeds’ designated penalty-taker. The Whites have received the second-most spot-kicks in the division, behind only Leicester.

Leeds need their big players to rise to the occasion over the next two weekends. Despite only being 22 years of age, Summerville belongs in that group.

We are backing him to step up to the plate at Loftus Road on Friday.
