Many Premier League followers believed it was a given that Liverpool would reach the final of the Europa League this season.

It was widely presumed that Jurgen Klopp’s last game at the helm would be either the final of this competition on May 22, or the showpiece match in the FA Cup three days later. Instead, Liverpool’s form has abandoned them in the run-in. 

Many pointed to their failure to win at Old Trafford in both the FA Cup and the Premier League as the turning point.

Yet perhaps it was actually a 3-0 home defeat by Atalanta that brought about this downturn. In terms of their all-round performance, Liverpool should have won both matches against Manchester United. When they faced the Italian outfit at Anfield, they were deservedly beaten.

In England the post-game focus was understandably on Liverpool, who went on to salvage some pride in an admittedly futile 1-0 victory in Bergamo in the second leg.

In Italy, the result was heralded as arguably the greatest of Gian Piero Gasperini’s hugely successful eight years in charge of Atalanta.

The innovative Italian coach has indeed done a fantastic job since assuming control in 2016. The only thing missing from his tenure is a piece of silverware.

Atalanta were minutes away from reaching the semi-finals of the Champions League in 2020, while they have twice finished as runners-up in the Coppa Italia under Gasperini. But the club has not got its hands on a trophy since 1963.

There is no obligation for Atalanta to do so given their size relative to others, but going all the way in the Europa League would be the icing on the cake for their veteran boss.

Needless to say, Marseille will have plenty to say about that. The French side have never won this tournament before, having finished as runners-up in 1999, 2004 and 2018.

Liverpool will be absent, but one of these two teams will take part in the final on May 22.

Marseille will hope that home advantage gets them past Atalanta, but the Italian outfit should not be written off.

Atalanta, who sit sixth in Serie A, are the favourites to qualify for the final ahead of Marseille, currently seventh in Ligue 1.

This preview is focused only on the first leg, though, and Marseille look overpriced to come out on top.

This has been a turbulent season at the Stade Velodrome. Marcelino was the manager until September 20. His replacement Gennaro Gattuso was in charge for less than five months. Marseille are now led by Jean-Louis Gasset, who at 70 years old is not exactly one for the long-term.

Yet OM are now just one aggregate victory away from a fourth appearance in the Europa League final - and we expect them to establish a first-leg lead in their semi against Atalanta.

Marseille have been fantastic at home this term. They have only lost once in Ligue 1 in front of their own fans, and that was to Paris Saint-Germain.

In the Europa League, they have won five and drawn one of their six matches on the south coast of France. They can make it six from seven here.

These are two attack-minded teams and that bodes well for Thursday’s match.

Atalanta might be the away team in the first leg, but as they showed at Anfield they will not simply sit back and hope for the best.

Their 33 Serie A games have yielded an average of 2.97 goals. In the Europa League, half of their 10 matches have produced over 2.5 goals.

Marseille’s 31 Ligue 1 fixtures have averaged 2.74 goals, while their 12 Europa League contests have averaged a whopping 3.67.

There are more statistics that show why this bet represents excellent value. In the knockout phase of the tournament, Liverpool have the highest xG - but Marseille are second and Atalanta are third.

First legs can sometimes be cagey, but this one is unlikely to be.

When he left Chelsea last summer after a disappointing stint in west London, it looked like Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s career as a top-level footballer was over.

Yet the Gabon international, who turns 35 in June, has been a revelation back in France, where he previously represented Dijon, Lille, Monaco and Saint-Etienne.

Aubameyang has scored 27 goals in 46 appearances up to now. Marseille have relied on him to a huge extent in the final third. Their next leading goal-getter is Iliman Ndiaye with six. 

Aubameyang’s overall tally includes 10 strikes in the Europa League. No one has more in the competition this season.

With the home crowd behind him, the 34-year-old will be confident of breaching Atalanta’s backline.
