Liverpool vs Everton betting predictions

The Merseyside neighbours are ready to renew hostilities at Anfield in the midweek round of Premier League fixtures. These two teams drew 2-2 in January thanks to a dramatic late equaliser from Everton defender James Tarkowski.

Can David Moyes’ men spring a surprise at the home of their arch-rivals, or will Liverpool take another step closer to the title?

Liverpool vs Everton predictions

It might sound strange to say given they are cruising at the top of the Premier League table, but March was a disappointing month for Liverpool.

The top flight took a back seat in March, with the Reds playing just one league game in the whole month - a relatively unconvincing 3-1 triumph over last-placed Southampton.

Instead, the EFL Cup and the Champions League took centre stage, and both competitions provoked agony rather than ecstasy in the red half of Merseyside.

First up, Liverpool were dumped out of Europe’s premier tournament by Paris Saint-Germain, who won a penalty shoot-out at Anfield after a 1-1 draw on aggregate.

A few days later Arne Slot’s side were outclassed by Newcastle United, who deservedly won 2-1 in the EFL Cup final at Wembley. That scoreline flattered Liverpool, who were second best in all departments.

The international break, plus a weekend off due to their earlier elimination from the FA Cup, has given Liverpool ample time to clear their heads.

Yes, it was a major blow to miss out on the first trophy of the season in the same week the club exited Europe. But if Liverpool go on to win the Premier League title this term, it would go down as a fantastic debut campaign for Slot.

In a way, the Dutchman and his team are victims of their own success. Their terrific performances in the first half of 2024/25 raised expectations, most notably in the Champions League. Remember, no one really expected Liverpool to be in the running for major silverware last summer. They are ahead of schedule in that regard.

The near-future offers cause for apprehension given Trent Alexander-Arnold’s impending departure and the continued uncertainty over the contractual status of both Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk.

For now, though, there is a Premier League title to be won. Liverpool have a 12-point lead over Arsenal in second place, so it is a matter of when rather than if they seal the deal. A derby-day triumph on Wednesday would go a long way to lifting the mood at Anfield.

These two sides shared four goals in the reverse fixture and this should be another engaging affair.

Liverpool to win and over 2.5 goals

When these two teams last met in February, Everton rescued a point in fairytale fashion. Tarkowski’s thunderous strike sent Goodison Park into raptures in the last ever derby at that famous old stadium.

Everton deserved a draw on the night and they head into this match in fine form, having gone nine top-tier games unbeaten under Moyes.

Their last league defeat came way back in the middle of January, so Wednesday’s encounter is far from a foregone conclusion despite Liverpool’s status as strong favourites.

Having said that, Everton have a pitiful record at Anfield. They have not won in front of fans at the ground of their chief adversaries since 1999.

Liverpool have not looked as defensively solid of late, so goals are on the cards here. But on balance, we fancy the hosts to edge it.

Both teams to score

As mentioned above, Liverpool have struggled to shut down opposition attacks over the last few weeks.

They have only kept one clean sheet in their last four matches, and that shut-out was thanks to Alisson Becker’s heroics and profligate PSG finishing.

Newcastle exploited Liverpool’s backline in the EFL Cup final both from open play and set-pieces. Moyes will have made a note of that.

Everton are not exactly a free-flowing side, but they have been much more effective going forward since Moyes replaced Sean Dyche in the dugout.

The Toffees have not drawn a blank in their last nine league matches and they can make it into double figures this week.

Luis Diaz to score any time

Luis Diaz has racked up the air miles over the last fortnight or so as he represented Colombia in the South American World Cup qualifiers.

It was a successful international break for the Liverpool forward, who scored against Brazil and Paraguay. Colombia only picked up a point overall but they are well placed to qualify for the USA, Canada and Mexico.

Liverpool supporters will hope that Diaz’s goals will have given him a timely boost in confidence ahead of the Merseyside derby.

The Colombian has not found the back of the net in his last seven appearances at club level, but that could change against Everton.
